The iPad 2 camera finally exists and the specs are fairly impressive as well. It is a bit of a shame that Apple did not put at least one camera on the original iPad but they made up for it this time around and put two cameras on the iPad 2, one on the front and one on the back. Better yet, the two cameras on the second generation iPad are actually both capable of recording video which allows for the iPad to have FaceTime functionality. When it comes down to it, the cameras on the iPad 2 are best suited for FaceTime or for an app like Skype than anything else because the iPad 2 camera resolution is not as high as the screen resolution and owners have made note that they are not all that happy about the resolution quality.

Rear iPad 2 Camera: As we said earlier this camera is capable of video recording but what makes this camera special is that it can record in 720p HD quality. This camera is also equipt with five times digital zoom.

Front iPad 2 Camera: Like the rear camera, the front iPad camera is capable of recording video however it does not have the specs of the rear camera. The front camera does not have a zoom feature nor does it record in HD but is a decent VGA camera.

If you really think about it, it seems like it is a bit unnatural to be using an iPad as a camera or a video camera for anything other than FaceTime or Skype. For this type of usage, the iPad 2 camera specs are great but I really would not recommend using either the front or back camera as a replacement for the camera in the iPhone or any other digital camera.

On last thing to make note of when using the iPad’s video camera, beware that this is a known battery killer – check out some of our iPad battery life tips if you plan on using the camera frequently so you can at the very least optimize your battery life other than the heavy camera usage.
